Welcome to the Radiation Protection of Patients e-learning page!

These e-learning courses are provided by the Radiation Protection of Patients (RPOP) Unit in the Radiation Safety and Monitoring Section of the Division of Radiation Protection, Transport, and Waste (NSRW) of the IAEA. These e-learning courses aim to assist Member States in building capacity in the field of radiation protection of patients.

The use of ionizing radiation in medicine undoubtedly benefits patients of diagnostic, interventional, and therapeutic procedures despite its potential for risk. At the 2012 “International Conference on Radiation Protection in Medicine: Setting the Scene for the Next Decade” in Bonn, Germany, the “Bonn Call for Action” was established to strike a balance between the benefits and the risks of using ionizing radiation in medicine. Designed to support the Bonn Call for Action, these e-learning courses provide valuable guidance and information for improving radiation protection and safety in medical facilities worldwide.

The Radiation Protection of Patients unit of the IAEA is putting continuous effort into developing useful educational and training resources for Member States on various topics regarding the safe uses of ionizing radiation in medicine. RPOP plans to develop additional e-learning courses to address important issues in the field of patient protection.

For more information, please visit our website, http://rpop.iaea.org. If you experience any problems or questions, please contact patient@iaea.org.

This e-learning program is designed to provide continuing education to medical imaging professionals, regulators and others that have interest in establishment and the use of Diagnostic Reference Levels.

Welcome to Radiation protection in fluoroscopy guided interventional procedures!

This course consists of six webinars organized by the IAEA in the period of 2016-2019. Each webinar is addressing a specific topic related to radiation protection of patients and medical staff during fluoroscopy guided interventional procedures.

Throughout this e-learning course the participants are expected to:

  • Learn about the growing use of fluoroscopy to guide various types of minimally invasive procedures in place of open surgery, and the associated radiation protection issues
  • Understand the radiation induced risks to the patient and medical staff in interventional procedures under fluoroscopy guidance
  • Understand key elements of radiation management during fluoroscopy guided procedures
  • Learn about the latest recommendations of international organizations on radiation dose limit for lens of the eye
  • Understand the various approaches to estimating occupational radiation doses to the lens of the eye
  • Learn about tools to map patient skin doses
  • Learn how to improve detection of skin injuries in patients and factors that help avoid such injuries
  • Learn how to utilize a local patient radiation management program
  • Comprehend the need for implementing a strong quality assurance program
  • Understand the influence of system specification and setup on optimization of clinical protocols

The estimated time for the course is 6 hours. After viewing all webinar recordings, participants can take a final exam to receive a certificate of completion.
