It describes practical measures for physical protection and inventory control at uranium extraction facilities and security measures for storing and transporting at shipping ports or other temporary storage facilities. The course also describes fundamental principles required to deter, detect and respond to unauthorized removal of UOC as defined in technical guidance on nuclear security in the uranium extraction industry. During the group sessions, the participants will apply concepts covered in the lectures as they work through practical exercises.

The purpose of the workshop is to familiarize participants with practical prudent management practices that prevent unauthorized removal of uranium ore concentrate during processing, storage and transport. It describes practical measures for physical protection and inventory control at uranium extraction and concentration facilities and security measures for storing and transporting at shipping ports or other temporary storage facilities. The workshop will also describe fundamental principles required to deter, detect and respond to unauthorized removal of UOC as defined in other Nuclear Security Series publications. Exercises will be included that allow students to identify and apply prudent management practices described in associated lectures.

The Regional Seminar will consist of presentations on the practical implementation of prudent management practices recommended in the IAEA non-series publication titled Nuclear Security in the Uranium Extraction Industry. It will include small-group working sessions with exercises that introduce practical measures for prudent management of UOC in process, storage and during transport. During the small-group sessions, the participants will apply concepts covered in the lectures as they work through practical exercises based on a hypothetical State and facility.
