IAEA/RCA RAS5081

Enhancing Food Safety and Supporting Regional Authentication
of Foodstuffs through Implementation of Nuclear Techniques (RCA)

Priorities

  • Establish a regional consortium of science practitioners and end-users for verification of four key foodstuffs (rice, honey tea and dairy products) using nuclear and related complementary analytical techniques.
  • Establish and provide training in regionally-agreed and harmonised protocols and procedures that can be used to verify the authenticity of a food sample.
  • Initiate the development and initial population of a web-accessible database for archiving of food authentication information for the region.

Activities in 2018 and 2019

  1. Kick-off meeting (05-09 February, 2018) Vienna.  All of the countries involved conducted a preliminary assessment of incidence, regulation, analytical capacity and human resource around food authenticity and fraud as a basis for formulating their country workplans for the remainder of the 4-year project.
  2. Regional Training Course 1 (25 Jun – 06 Jul, 2018) New Zealand. ‘Fundamentals of using nuclear techniques for verifying food authenticity’. Introductory theory and hands-on training in stable isotope analysis, trace element analysis and molecular spectroscopy for 25 Participants from 12 Member States.
  3. Regional Training Course 2 (10-14 Nov, 2018) Malaysia. ‘Advance nuclear techniques for verifying food authenticity (train the trainer)’. Advanced theory and hands-on training in stable isotope analysis and trace element analysis for 12 Participants from 5 Member States.
  4. Regional Training Course 3 (11-15 April, 2019) Hangzhou, China. ‘Chemometric add-in for Excel introductory course’. Theory and assignments in multivariate statistics for 20 Participants from Member States.
  5. Expert Missions to raise awareness of Food Fraud and the potential for related food safety incidents.  Fiji and Cambodia completed and planned for Nepal and Korea.
  6. Regional Training Course 4 (23-27 Sep, 2019) Beijing, China. ‘Fundamentals of using nuclear techniques for verifying food authenticity (Part II)’. Intermediate theory and hands-on training in stable isotope analysis, trace element analysis and molecular spectroscopy for 24 Participants.
  7. Mid-Term Coordination Meeting (18-22 November, 2019) Hanoi, Vietnam.
