Nuclear Back End Webinar Series 2.7 - IAEA Challenge: Innovations In Nuclear Facility Decommissioning 2022 - Meet The Winners

At this event, a panel of decommissioning experts announced the three best entries of the IAEA Challenge: Innovations in Nuclear Facility Decommissioning 2022. The audience was invited to vote for an additional winner, from a pool of finalist entries. The four winners are invited to participate in and present their essays at the IAEA International Conference on Nuclear Decommissioning to be held in Vienna, Austria from 15-19 May 2023.

Nuclear Back End Webinar Series 2.1 - Integrated Approach to Decommissioning within a Multi-Facility Site

This Webinar will highlight important aspects regarding safe, timely and cost-effective implementation of decommissioning at multifacility sites. Presented will be technical and organizational factors that may affect the decommissioning of nuclear facilities when viewed in the context of multifacility sites. Such factors may induce cost savings, synergies and other favourable impacts, but may also induce additional constraints and complications. Interactions between facilities might include aspects such as the sharing of common systems, staff utilization, and the ownership and licensing of adjacent facilities. Prioritization of particular decommissioning projects will be also an important consideration.

Nuclear Back End Webinar Series 2.2 - Global Status of Nuclear Decommissioning

This webinar, focusing on the global status of decommissioning of nuclear facilities, will open the 2022 series of the IAEA Back End Wednesday Webinars. International experts will discuss the findings of a recently completed IAEA collaborative project on this topic. Issues being addressed will include current trends in decommissioning, including the main impacting factors on strategy definition and on project implementation. Resource needs for implementation, including human, financial and technological aspects, will also be considered.

Nuclear Back End Webinar Series 2.3 - Sustainable Radioactive Waste Management – highlights and conclusions of the IAEA International Conference on Radioactive Waste

Nuclear Back End Webinar Series 2.4 - Human Resource Development for Decommissioning

This webinar, focusing on the development of human resources for the decommissioning of nuclear facilities, will be the 16th in the series of the IAEA Back End Wednesday Webinars. International experts will discuss the findings of a recently completed IAEA collaborative project on this topic and plans for a new project beginning this year. Issues being addressed will include strategic human resource planning; organizational transformation and engagement and retention of personnel; and competency development, including process evaluation.

After attending this webinar, participants will have an increased understanding of:

  • Definition of competency needs in line with the established overall decommissioning strategy
  • Different organizational approaches to decommissioning and associated organizational transformation processes, including engagement, retention and motivation of staff
  • Competency development to fulfil the needs of the human resource strategy and evaluation of the competency development process, including training.

Nuclear Back End Webinar Series 2.6 - Management of Disused High Activity Sources: International Experiences, Lessons Learned and Latest Technological Developments

This webinar, focusing on the management of Disused High Activity Sources, is the 16th in the IAEA Back End Wednesday Webinars series.
International experts summarize a recent  technical meeting that is a part of developing a  new IAEA Nuclear Energy Series (NES) document “Management of Category 1 to 2 Disused Sealed Radioactive Sources-Approaches and Practical Experiences”.

The new NES will take information from the IAEA-TECDOC-1301 “Management of spent high activity radioactive sources (SHARS)” and the recent technical meeting to develop a more comprehensive document. The Webinar includes a discussion on new technical concepts, reference designs, engineering designs, and integration with final disposal or storage options.
