IAEA Safety Standards Overview

This e-learning course provides an overview on the purpose, scope, structure, development and uses of the IAEA safety standards.

The target audience for this e-learning course are employees of the national and international organizations who are involved into drafting and application of national standards and regulations, as well as individuals who are interested in learning more about the IAEA safety standards and how to apply them.

IAEA Safety Standards General Safety Requirements Part 1 (Revision 1): Governmental, Legal and Regulatory Framework for Safety

The purpose of this course is to instruct participants on the safety requirements of GSR Part 1 (Rev. 1). This includes the Fundamental Safety Objective that the requirements are based on. The content of the course covers the responsibilities for safety assigned to the government, the regulatory body and the operating organizations.

IAEA Safety Standards General Safety Requirements Part 2: Leadership and Management for Safety

The purpose of this course is to instruct participants on the safety requirements of GSR Part 2. This includes the Fundamental Safety Objective that the requirements are based on. The content of the course covers the differences between management and leadership, safety culture and how the management system, leadership and safety culture support each other to enhance safety.

IAEA Safety Standards Series No. GSR Part 3 Radiation Protection and Safety of Radiation Sources: International Basic Safety Standards

The purpose of this course is to instruct participants on the safety requirements of GSR Part 3. This includes understanding the Fundamental Safety Objective that the requirements are based on. The content of the course is broad in nature to match the scope of GSR Part 3; however, there will be links to additional resources provided to allow participants the ability to learn more about specific topical areas.

IAEA Safety Standards General Safety Requirements Part 4 (Revision 1): Safety Assessment for Facilities and Activities

The purpose of this course is to instruct participants on the safety requirements of GSR Part 4 (Rev. 1). This includes the Fundamental Safety Objective that the requirements are based on. The content of the course covers the scope of safety assessment, who is responsible for conducting and verifying the safety assessment, and the methods and tools used to conduct the safety assessment.

IAEA Safety Standards GSR Part 5 Predisposal Management of Radioactive Waste and GSR Part 6 Decommissioning of Facilities

The purpose of this course is to instruct participants on the safety requirements of GSR Part 5 and GSR Part 6. This includes the Fundamental Safety Objective that the requirements are based on. The content of the course covers the concepts of predisposal management of radioactive waste and decommissioning, the roles and responsibilities of the government, regulatory body and operating organization and key stages in the facility lifetime when safety related decisions are made.

IAEA Safety Standards General Safety Requirements Part 7: Preparedness and Response for a Nuclear or Radiological Emergency

The purpose of this course is to instruct participants on the safety requirements of GSR Part 7. This includes the Fundamental Safety Objective that the requirements are based on. The content of the course covers the goals of emergency preparedness and response, the roles and responsibilities for establishing an effective Emergency Management System and examples of how the requirements of GSR Part 7 could be applied in practice.

IAEA Safety Standards Specific Safety Requirements 1: Site Evaluation for Nuclear Installations

The purpose of this course is to instruct participants on the safety requirements of SSR-1. This includes the Fundamental Safety Objective that the requirements are based on. The content of the course covers the scope of site evaluation, how site and regional characteristics might affect the safety of a nuclear installation, the types of external hazards assessed in the site evaluation and how the potential effects of the nuclear installation on a region are evaluated.

IAEA Safety Standards Specific Safety Requirements 3: Safety of Research Reactors

The purpose of this course is to instruct participants on the safety requirements of SSR-3. This includes the Fundamental Safety Objective that the requirements are based on. The content of the course covers the main safety functions of research reactors, how safety requirements are applied to ensure safety in the design and operation of research reactors and the responsibilities of the operating organization.

Guidance for Consultants and Invited Experts on Drafting IAEA Safety Standards

This e-learning module provides guidance for consultants and invited experts who are involved in drafting IAEA safety standards. It explains the nature and structure of the IAEA safety standards, how they are prepared and summarizes the key points on the content, style and terminology used in the publication series.
