Welcome to the Radiation Protection of Patients e-learning page!

These e-learning courses are provided by the Radiation Protection of Patients (RPOP) Unit in the Radiation Safety and Monitoring Section of the Division of Radiation Protection, Transport, and Waste (NSRW) of the IAEA. These e-learning courses aim to assist Member States in building capacity in the field of radiation protection of patients.

The use of ionizing radiation in medicine undoubtedly benefits patients of diagnostic, interventional, and therapeutic procedures despite its potential for risk. At the 2012 “International Conference on Radiation Protection in Medicine: Setting the Scene for the Next Decade” in Bonn, Germany, the “Bonn Call for Action” was established to strike a balance between the benefits and the risks of using ionizing radiation in medicine. Designed to support the Bonn Call for Action, these e-learning courses provide valuable guidance and information for improving radiation protection and safety in medical facilities worldwide.

The Radiation Protection of Patients unit of the IAEA is putting continuous effort into developing useful educational and training resources for Member States on various topics regarding the safe uses of ionizing radiation in medicine. RPOP plans to develop additional e-learning courses to address important issues in the field of patient protection.

Welcome to Tips & Tricks: Radiation Protection in Radiography!ImageOverview

This e-learning program consists of individual short lectures on topics that are of relevance in radiography. The course is designed to provide education for diagnostic imaging professionals regarding radiation protection in radiography.

Throughout this e-learning course the participants are expected to:

  1. Improve their understanding of radiation protection in different subspecialties of radiography.
  2. Learn techniques for applying the principle of optimization.
  3. Understand the role and ethics of medical radiation technologists.
  4. Grasp the importance of proper communication with patients and legal guardians in terms of radiation protection.
  5. Become familiar with reject/repeat analysis programs (RAPs) and their role in quality control.

The estimated time for each topic is approximately 1 hour. After completing each topic, participants can take a final exam to receive a certificate of completion. This e-learning course is provided in English.

In this course the topics will be rolled out successively.

Welcome to Safety and Quality in Radiotherapy!

This e-learning program is designed to provide education for radiotherapy professionals regarding safety and quality in radiotherapy. Throughout this e-learning course, the participants are expected to:

  1. Improve their understanding of safety in radiotherapy
  2. Learn techniques to reduce and avoid radiotherapy incidents;
  3. Understand the value and use of incident learning systems;
  4. Learn about useful sources of information to enhance safety in radiotherapy;
  5. Gain insight into improving safety culture in medical clinics/facilities.

The estimated time for the entire course is 5 hours. After completing the course, participants can take the final exam to receive a certificate of attendance. This e-learning is provided in English.

Welcome to Radiation Dose Management in CT!

This e-learning program is designed to provide continuing education to medical imaging professionals regarding safety and quality in computed tomography (CT).

Throughout this e-learning course the participants are expected to:

  1. Learn the appropriate use of CT;
  2. Understand the various CT techniques and scan parameters;
  3. Understand CT dose metrics and tracking methods;
  4. Address the needs of creating various CT protocols, including those for chest, abdomen, and head, as well as those for paediatric patients; and
  5. Understand how to optimize exposure during pregnancy.

The estimated time for the entire course is 5 hours maximum. After completing the course, participants can take the final exam to receive a certificate of attendance. This e-learning course is provided in English.
